Australian Terrier

The Australian Terrier originated and were bred in Australia. They are a type of terrier dog but of small size. Their ancestors who were bred originated in Great Britain. The Australian Terrier’s are very small in size. They weight around 14 lbs (6.5 kg) for a full grown healthy adult and stand tall at around 10 inches (25 cm). They have very small legs.

They also have a medium length coat. They also have a harsh double coat that is not trimmed at most times. The hair on the legs and the muzzle is relatively of short length as compared to the rest of the body and tail. Their coats come in various colors and shades ranging from blue to red and some even have special markings on various parts of the body. The most common occurring colour for the Australian Terrier is tan and sandy.

The tails of these breed of dogs used to be docked, but with the countries banning the practice of docking these days, many people let their tails be the way they should be. All the colors they come in and all the different spots and types of marking they have are accepted as the breed of the Australian Terrier.

The ideal Australian Terriers are full of high spirits given their small size and alert at all times. They are said to have the aggressiveness of a Hedge Hunter. They also ranked 34th in “the Intelligence of Dogs” by Stanley Coren. They are definitely well above average in intelligence when it comes to the rest of the dogs. Normally, the dogs with a blend of high spirits and intelligence and small size happen to be hyper and too naughty. But that’s not the case here.

The Australian Terriers happen to be very obedient to their masters and they can be easily trained too. They like to dominate most of the times with other Terriers or any other pets around. So care must be taken if you have a multi pet environment. They are very people friendly in general; no matter if it’s their master or the family they happen to live with. But the male Australian Terriers do not go well with each other what so ever most of the times. They like human companionship and like interacting with people, whether it’s fetching ball or just a walk at the park or just lazing around the house by their masters.

Many health surveys were conducted for the Australian all over the world since 1997. And as per the results, it showed that an average life span of a healthy and fit Australian Terrier was around 11 years. As per the surveys that took place in UK, the average life span was reported at an approximate of 12.1 years. There was another survey conducted in 2002 which reported that 17% of those died of old age and 67% of them died of cancer and the least amount of deaths were because of 13% diabetes possibility.
