Austrian Black and Tan Hound
The Austrian Black and Tan Hound have originated in Austria and are said to be descendants of the Celtic Hounds, which are ancient species of dogs. The Austrian Black and Tan Hounds were bred mainly for hunting purposes. They are hard working dogs, no matter what the terrain, they can work anywhere from the flat country fields to the high rocky mountains. The United Kennel Club only began recognizing the as a breed of Hounds only in the year of 2006.
The Austrian Black and Tan Hounds are medium sized dogs. They just come in one main color coat of black and tan with smooth silky short hairs. They are very obedient, given their hunting ancestry. They are easy to train and are very well behaved. Their sense of smell is excellent, and it is not a good option to leave the dog unattained at an open space as they tend to follow the interesting scents that come their way.
They have a wide and broad skull with strong muzzle and pigmented lips of dark color. They lack 2 premolars tooth in their set of evenly spaced tooth, and this is common and nothing to be worried about. Although they are disqualified as a proper the Austrian Black and Tan Hound breed if their bite is overshot or undershot. They have clear dark brown eyes and a black nose. The ears on the Austrian Black and Tan Hounds are medium in length and rounded at the tips and happen to hang down flatly on the sides of their face.
The body of the Austrian Black and Tan Hound is broad and deep. And they have a long back giving them a rectangle proportioned body. They have a rectangular shape to their body unlike the square shape that most other breeds have. Their length is always longer than their height; this is what gives them the rectangular shape. They have black nails on their strong feet and the tails happen o be slightly bent.
They have coarse hair on the underside of the tail, but without a brush. The coat on these dogs is short, smooth and silky. They hairs on them are very close fitting and offer no room for bare skin. It is also dense enough to protect them from all the pointy shrubs and bushes during their hunting trips. They come in just one color of black and the fawn markings above their eyes must be clearly visible to qualify them as a pure breed of Austrian Black and Tan Hounds. The intensity and the size of the fawn markings may vary from dog to dog, but they are a must. Any difference in the pattern of color on their coat or the lack of fawn markings above their eyes gets them disqualifies from being a pure breed. The Austrian Black and Tan Hounds stand tall at a height of 19 to 22 inches for a full grown and healthy and well exercised adult.
