Belgian Shepherd Dog
The Belgian Sheepdog or famously know as the Belgian Shepherd Dog is also called Chien de Berger Belge. It is a member of the sheepdog breed of dogs and varies in size from medium sized to large sized. As the name suggests they originated from Belgium, and is very much like other sheep dogs from this region. The German Shepherd, the Dutch Shepherd and he likes are more or less the same. The Belgian Shepherd has been identified by various registries to be of 4 different types: Tervuren, Groenendael, Malinois and Laekenois. Don’t be confused, all are still the same, with slight differences. These are registered as sheep dogs.
The male Belgian Shepherds weigh around 25 to 30 kg and the females weigh around 20 to 25 kg. The males stand tall at around 60 to 66 cm and their female counter parts stand tall at around 56 to 62 cm. They have thick coat of hair on them. It long around their neck and is short around the rest of the body. Although they are commonly found in a all black or a black with brown coat, it is not the same always. Their coat depends widely on the variety of the breed. Their litter size is around 6 to 10 pups. Their life span also varies mainly on the breed that they are. I could vary anything between 10 to 14 years depending on the hereditary health risks and the daily diet of the dog itself.
The Belgian Shepherd Dog projects an image of grace and power. It looks very elegant doing anything but everything since it’s also a medium to large sized dog. All the varieties they come in happen to offer this same skeletal structure. One of the most visual characteristics of this dog is its square height from ground up.
They have been described as a highly intelligent breed on numerous occasions. They are alert and sensitive to every little thing that goes around them. They are very good with kids and end up having very strong bonds with their owners and the families they happen to spend time with. They are very loyal to their owners and like socialising even as little puppies. Close interaction with people is what they love and is one of the reasons why they are considered to be beautiful and yet highly trainable. They make for excellent house pets.
Unlike other dogs who like socialising a lot, the Belgian Shepherd also is a good watch dog and a guard dog, provided they are trained well. They like their training to be on the basis of rewards for every trick and punishment is not something they go well with. It makes them react with more negativity. They love agility training and are very rough and tough to handle everyday hurdles. They also make for good dogs in the police and military organisations around the world because of their obedient behaviour and their ability to obey commands very well.
