Braque du Bourbonnais
Braque du Bourbonnais is one of the popular gun dogs which come in two colors, liver or fawn. These pointing dogs can have a short tail and are sometimes found with no tail at all. They can be ticked moderately or heavily. They are medium sized and can make very good family dogs too. This breed of dogs has a rounded head with well developed parietal bones. It was introduced in the USA in 1988. It is now their second largest producer.
As per breeding standards, there are certain rules as to how the coat color should be. The spots should not be larger than a palm. Both the eyes cannot come within the same patch of color. In the Bourbonnais, two official colors exist. Liver is also called as wine dregs and faded lilac. Fawn color is also called as peach blossom. The nose will be of the same color as the coat.
Its chest is wide and deep. It can reach and even extend a little below its elbow. They also have rounded ribs with an underline that rises towards the back. The female Bourbonnais is generally longer and thinner than the males. It is also much more elegant. They are generally healthy except rare occurrences of hip dysplasia.
It is basically a hunting dog and has a good temperament. A dog of this breed is comfortable while galloping but while hunting it may reduce it to a trot. It is light on its feet and can quickly change directions. This is a skill that will be very useful while hunting. They are also easily adaptable to different terrains and game. It learns quickly and needs to be around people to be happy.
Braque du Bourbonnais is a very active dog and needs exercise to stay fit. Its short coat is easy to maintain any doesn’t need a lot of care unlike other dogs with thick coats. They also have very little shedding and hence people don’t mind having them inside the house. It will need an occasional ear cleaning or nail clipping like all other dogs. It was on the verge of disappearing a one point and their number began to increase when a club for the breeders was created. When it is doing the pointing, it points with an air of authority.
The Bourbonnais is a handsome dog which is not only a good pointer dog but also can be a good house dog. Its eyes will be either a deep amber color or hazel, depending on the coat color of the dog. As they need daily physical activity, they should not be kept in apartments. A house with a yard will be ideal and as it loves people, it will fare better if it is allowed into the house rather than be kenneled outside. They also respond better to gentle commands and a heavy hand. As they are intelligent, they can be trained easily and quickly. They have a life expectancy of 13-15 years.
