Broholmer

The Broholmer also known as the Danish Broholmer is a large dog from the molloser breed that originated in Denmark. These dogs were used mainly as watch dogs for the wealthier homes. In some cases the Broholmer was even used as a hunting dog where they hunted mainly stags.

The Broholmer is a large dog of the mastiff type. It is built quite strong with a large and rectangular body. These dogs have very powerful and composed movements. The Broholmer has powerful and dominating forequarters that are characteristic of this type of dog. The head is wide and massive with a sturdy neck with traces of some loose skin hanging in front. They have a deep and broad chest. While in the resting position, the dogs’ head remains quit low almost in the stooping position with the tail drooped down as well. But when in motion the head is held high yet not quite over the top line of the body. When the Broholmer is attentive the head and tail are held quite high with very alert and attentive eyes. This means the dog is ready for action. These dogs have a two layered coat as well with a relatively thick undercoat and top coat lying quite close to the body. The dogs are seen mainly in golden red, black mask and black. There will be some traces of white on the chest, tip of the tail or even feet for some dogs.

The Broholmer is a very watchful dog and is greatly territorial making them a good option for watch dogs. They are friendly, calm and good tempered. It is wise while training the dog to establish a definite master or as the dog will see it a pack leader. This dog like any other animal is used to responding to a pack leader and once the mater is established obedience training will come quite naturally to the Broholmer. These dogs though even tempered and calm are known to have a fierce growl and a piercing bite. This is yet another feature making them good guard dogs. A young Broholmer should be introduced to all friends and family before reaching full growth as they are not very friendly with strangers and being territorial can attack a person they don’t like. These dogs are very affectionate with their family and love being around people. They make good companions for owners that can be a little strict from the start.

The Broholmer needs a lot of exercise starting with a long walk everyday. The dog should be taught to heel behind or beside their master and never in front. Like any other dogs of this size they need to be carefully observed for signs of over excursion as little pups.

These dogs weigh in at about 87-176 pounds and are anywhere from 22-30 inches tall. The Broholomer has a life span of about 6 -11 years. This breed of dog sheds heavily twice a year but is very easy to groom.
