Bruno Jura Hound


The Bruno Jura Hound is a domestic hound that was first seen through the middle ages and was used like most other dog breeds for hunting. As it is a hound the dog is known for its tracking abilities and much like other hounds has the capability of tracking a scent for miles through the rocky terrain of mountains in Swiss-French border. They were used mainly for hunting hare.

This type of dog hails from the hound family of dogs and is a rather small hound as compared to the rest of the family. The Bruno Jura Hound has a rather strong muzzle with a domed and large head. This dog has deep set eyes usually of a dark color. They are characterized by their ears which are very long set quite low on the head. This breed of hound has a nicely proportioned head with a medium sized muzzle, proportionate to the size of the dog’s head.

The Jura hound has a short, thick and hard coat that is seen in black with tan spots or tan with black saddle. The prominent nose of this hound is usually colored according to the coat or is a plain and simple black. Their coats can be either rough haired or smooth haired according to the breed they belong to. The St. Hubert’s breed; have a rather smooth coat of fine short hair. This hound has a rectangular body with an occipital bone that is quite prominent. These dogs have a level or scissor bite with a medium sized yet powerful neck. They have a nice and leveled top line body that is perfectly suited for any kind of terrain. Their chests are not too broad and are set quite deep within the body.

The Jura hound has strong, straight and firm legs with a back of good length. They have forelegs that are strong boned, clean and quite straight as compared to their hind legs which are bent to moderate level at the hocks and stifles. The Bruno Jura Hounds have tough padded feet that are round with a strong nail structure. The tail of the hound is held at a medium height, somewhat pointing upwards yet not considered a curl.

The Bruno Hound is very agile with strong, swift and driving movements. Their bodies have for centuries been trained for hunting and they are instinctual hunters. They love going on hikes and experiencing new kinds of terrain. They make wonderful companions for hunters and due to their hunting instincts are not very suited for being household pets. This breed of hound is very affectionate, gentle and rather even tempered. They are still very protective and will lash out at anyone who attempts to hurt their owners. They are very aloof with strangers and need firm handling if kept as household pets.

The Bruno Hounds range in size from 17-23 inches tall and weigh about 15-0 kgs. They have a life expectancy of about 10 - 13 years.
