Bull and Terrier

The breed of dog that was part terrier part bulldogs were known as the Bull and Terrier breed of dogs. This breed of dog has a very violent and somewhat gory history. These dogs were bred mainly for baiting, dog fighting, and as is the case with most dogs, hunting. Even though these dogs are relatively small they were used to hunt vermin and due to their ancestry, they could withstand bites from the vermin making them almost invincible to the vermin they were meant to destroy.

Though these dogs had a unpleasant past, a lot of people believe that they were falsely given a bad reputation. These dogs have been known for their intelligence and have been known to make brilliant protective and loving companions despite their unfairly bad reputation. The Bull and Terrier has strength and accompanying tenacity that till date remains unmatched by any other canine breed. The Bull and Terrier is a somewhat heavy set breed of dog with a muscular, glossy and short coat. They have shot fine strands of hair that are shiny and easy to maintain. These dogs are not heavy shedders. A bath once a month with a good brushing everyday is all it takes to keep a Bull and Terrier looking and feeling great. The coat unlike other breeds comes in only two variations of either white with markings or all white. They are compact little dogs that stand a mere 18 to 22 inches tall and weigh in at not more than 30 to 60 pounds. The females are shorter and lighter than the males but the difference is only marginal.

All dogs of this breed require the basic obedience training which helps control their somewhat impulsive nature. One cardinal rule for a Bull and Terrier owner is to expect the unexpected and train the dog well to avoid and mishaps. These little dogs are full of energy and thrive on attention from their owners. They are loyal and courageous dogs and need to be socialized with other animals and people while they are still puppies. They dislike a large extent being cooped up in the house or left alone for long periods of time.

They are weary of strangers and much prefers being around their owners as much as possible. A word of caution to the owners if you do not have enough time to spare a Bull and Terrier is not a good choice. They become hostile when left unattended for too long and need human companionship as mush as possible. These dogs are very clever and love being around children. They bond very quickly with children and make great companions for them.

These dogs need a good amount of care and exercise. A vigorous brushing with a bristled brush is a necessity for keeping the hair on the coat looking shiny. They like running along beside a bicycle or going for a long walk. Regular exercise keeps illnesses at bay and the dog healthy.
