Cane Corso
The Cane Corso is a large molloser breed that was used for mainly guard dog purposes. The Corso is an Italian breed of dog that is very elegant, muscular and powerful. This dog expresses agility, endurance and strength. They are very distinguished and strongly built dogs.
The Italian Corso as they are also called has a slightly arched neck which is muscular, strong and oval shaped. The body is again very muscular, strong and compact. The skin is quite thick with practically no dewlap over the neck. It is best when the head does not have any wrinkles at all.
The coat is made up of short, dense and very shiny hair. The coat is not smooth but vitreous in its texture. The light layer of short hair becomes thicker in the winter, for protection against the cold weather. The ears drop forward naturally but used to be cropped to stand perfectly upright and straight before.
The Cane Corso has a coat of two colors mainly fawn and black. All Corso’s should have a black nose except in some cases where it can be grey. There small white patches on the nose, chin, chest and toes, the smaller the patch the better; according to breeders.
The Italian Corso is a dog that is very willing to please its owners. They are pretty quite around the house and are know for their loyalty. These dogs are easily trained and are considered to be rather intelligent dogs. They are very good in a family setting and love children. The Cane Corso is very affectionate and docile but only with its owners. These dogs are gentle yet protective. They make very reputable watch dogs and do not have a tendency of wandering away from their family or home. These dogs have a very stable temper and enjoy being close by their masters. This dog can become a very terrifying, brave and protective watch dog when the need arises. It is recommended not to get on the fighting side of this dog. Though not ferocious by nature they can turn beastly if anyone tries to attack their family. The Cane Corso needs to have an experienced owner who is capable of being an authoritative leader and master to this dog. This breed of dog needs to have a structure of rules to follow. Once a Corso is trained they become very loving and submissive to their owners.
The Cane Corso is very easy to groom. Just a regular brushing to remove the accumulated dead hair is needed. They are not very heavy shedders. The males are about 64 to 68 cms tall and weigh about 45 to 50 kgs. The females are 60 to 64 cms tall and weigh 40 to 45 kgs. These dogs are very athletic and require regular exercise. They need to be taken for long jogs or walks and love playing a good game of fetch. The Cane Corso will live for anywhere between 10 to 11 years.
