Keeshond
Different breeds of dogs have different types of physical characteristics. This is the main factor which differentiates them. Some may be large with a very a very good coat, some may be medium sized while others may be short with no hair at all. This makes them attractive in their own ways. One such small but very attractive dog is the Keeshond. This is a dog which originated from Germany. It is closely related to the Pomeranian which is a popular show dog. This dog was originally called the German Spitz and its name was changed to the Keeshond in England.
The Keeshond is a small and cute dog. It grows to a height of 17 to 18 inches and weighs around 35 to 45 pounds. It is a typical Spitz, sturdy and strong with a coat which is neither coarse nor smooth. The head is typically wedge shaped with a mouth which is medium in length. The ears are short and pointed. It also has a characteristically expressive face. The tail is so tightly curled up with the body that sometimes it is not possible to distinguish the tail from the body. The coat is double and is thick around the neck. They have a coloration of which is a mix of white, grey and sometimes cream. There is light featuring on the fore and the hind limbs which adds to their soft look. They have a distinctive feature called spectacles which form around the corner of their eyes. The ears are small, erect and triangular in shape.
The Keeshond is a very playful and energetic breed. It has a very strong reflex action and is a very good jumper. It has very strong legs and can support their entire weight on their hind limbs and walk around. They are very attached to their owners and will lie on their laps for hours on stretch. They have a good level of obedience which is a very good character because they can be troublesome with their high energy levels. They have a very loud and distinctive bark, and hence they were used as guard dogs in the early times in huge manors and forts. They would alert their owners through their high pitched bark of visitors. They will accept strangers once the family has welcomed them and will treat them as one of them. They love children and are very popular as house dogs. They can be entertaining and also serve well as guard dogs. Hence this dog is much sought after.
They do need their share of exercise, if they do not get it; they will let it out with incessant barking. They are easily trainable and do not need any harsh punishment as they will obey well after some time. They need to be trained to be active or they have a possibility of developing tepidness towards their own family. This dog is a highly sought after show dog and can be trained to do impressive tricks. They will try to please their masters and this is very beneficial in training them.
