ARIEGEOIS

It is native to the Ariege area in France, and probably turned out from the crossing of the half-blood, French bloodhound and a Gascony Blue. It has kept the traits of the original dog, although it is less persistent, smaller and lighter. We are still waiting for the Spanish Federation to allow a translation of the breed’s name to our language.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the ARIEGEOIS
It is a tracking dog, medium sized, light constitution and elegant stance. The males stand between 52 to 58 cm and the females are slightly shorter. The head is elongated, slightly convex skull, undefined stop, straight nasal canal and black nose. The dark brown, wide open eyes have a lively and intelligent gaze; the ears are thin and droopy forming creases. It has dense, fine and short hair, white with black spots; the orbital arch is reddish, which gives the face a peculiar appearance.

TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the ARIEGEOIS
The Ariegeois is sociable, playful and cheerful, it is also awake and hardworking, for which it is docile and obedient to the master’s orders. It doesn’t have problems adapting to any environment, it is enough that it feels part of the adopting family.

When small, it shows a clear predilection for hare hunting but is effective when chasing bores.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a ARIEGEOIS
Due to the fact that its fur is very short, it is enough to brush it every now and then. It is convenient to take care of its teeth and ears that, as in every droopy eared breed, are in risk of suffering undesirable infections that may produce infections which must be immediately taken care of. It needs plenty of exercise, so if it lives in a flat, it must be walked at least daily during an hour distributed in the morning and evening, taking it to a park where it can run freely.
