BASSET NORMAND

This is a French breed, descending from some basset varieties already extinct, whose controlled breeding began in 1870. From then the Artois was selected, now extinct and the Normand variety. In 1924 the Normand basset was defined, in which there was no trace of the Artois.

It is able to penetrate thickly vegetated areas, but we must prevent it from entering very rugged terrains since its limbs are too short to resist them.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the BASSET NORMAND
It is rustic, strong and compact. In males as in females they adjust to a height between 30 and 36 cm. It has a moderately wide head, with a somewhat bulky muzzle and a wide and black nose. The eyes are oval shaped and large, the color is dark and adequate to the coat color with a serious and focused gaze; the ears have a very low insertion, are flexible, looped, very long and thin. The fur is short and dense, bicolor in reddish and white or tricolor, including black. One of its most appreciated traits is its pretty and deep voice.

TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the BASSET NORMAND
It is courageous, active and not shy at all. It likes the family life, devotes great affection to the most direct owner and a more moderate affection towards the rest of the people. It is cheerful and intelligent, it adapts very easily although its education must be firm since it’s quite stubborn.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a BASSET NORMAND
It can live in the city, as long as it is provided with enough time to exercise daily outdoors. For its fur care frequent brushings are enough and, as every dog with these characteristics, its eyes need to be continually watched. The diet must be balanced to avoid its tendency to overweight.

When it wished something that has been denied, the dog stares into the eyes with impressive sadness and will not look away until it is provided with what it wants.
