BEAGLE
Also called the Basset Faitee de Bretagne, this small, French bloodhound descends from larger breeds, such as the Grand Fauve, currently practically extinct, breed from which it inherited its great resistance and impulsiveness.
Some breeders, in order to soften these genetic traits, cross it with other more moderate and smaller bassets. In France, it is a dog that is much appreciated by the hunters, since it is able to endure days of work without showing fatigue and, it is one of the few dogs specialized in rabbit hunting that is able to go into the vegetation despite its density.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the BEAGLE
It keeps the fur texture and color it inherited from its predecessor, which means that its fur is short, dense and a little rough, tawny colored. It is a short limbed dog, but with a solid and elongated body that stands at 34 cm to the cross and weighs between 15 and 20 kg. Its eyes, under prominent supercilliary arches, are dark and expressive. The ears, with low implantation, are moderately long and have pointy ends.
Almost every current beagle descends from a pack, property of a British clergyman that lived in the middle of the XIX century. This pack was famous for its efficiency in collecting all kinds of medium sized game and, since they were excellent swimmers, they were especially useful in duck hunting.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the BEAGLE
It has a decided, lively and energic temperament; it absolutely lacks shyness and is not aggressive at all. Intelligent and obedient when learning and adapts to the family easily, it likes children and, in general, is very affectionate with people around it, although, as many other active hunting dogs, its marked preference, almost adoration, is devoted to its most direct owner, the one it goes with during the long hunting hours and makes it feel essential.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a BEAGLE
If it is a dog used in sports, long walks can produce painful swelling in the feet pads; to solve this problem, the only possible way is keeping it inactive during the necessary amount of time for the swelling to give. This breed enjoys constant contact with nature, but if it lives in a flat, its daily exercise time should not be overlooked.
