BLOODHOUNDS AND TRACKING

Since immemorial times, the hunter has developed his activity with the aid of the dog, depending on its acute sense of hearing, sight and mostly its sense of smell, to collect difficult game. The breeds in this group are those who continually chase and with a sustained race, the preys its sense of smell points toward.

They are frequently used along other dogs, forming packs of at least eight specimens, always ensuring that all the animals know each other well and respect hierarchy order. Dogs working in packs have a similar relationship to those of wolves, with a leadership that avoids fighting amongst the adult males. Besides hunting, which is currently and in developed societies considered a sport, its versatile use make them also guard dogs, defense dogs and, most of the breeds in this group, family pets that coexist in the same space as man, even if they never forget their instinct. Bred to hunt, they are told apart by their different specialties: those that track visually can make the prey from a distance and chase it aided by their great speed. Those that track with the sense of smell chase the game with their noses close to the ground.

These magnificent hunters are told apart from others in their ways of locating and chasing the game.
