BOURBONNAIS BRACO

Original from the central Bourbonnais area in France and it is known, since at least the XVI century, this dog was and is still bred for hunting partridge. During its life many mistakes have been made, inappropriate crossings, poor selection and, in summary, lack of interest, which has seriously harmed the breed’s purity. In the 1960 and 1970, a new and rigid selection genetic criterion was set to regain that purity, until a good Bourbonnais specimen was achieved.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the BOURBONNAIS BRACO
They are medium sized. The males stand at 51 to 57 cm to the cross and females from 48 to 55, the weighs are, respectively, from 18 to 25 kg and from 16 to 22 kg. It is very proportionate and has a solid musculature, which confers it a strong, robust and rustic appearance. The head is solid, rounded skull, wide muzzle shaped as a cone and a slight stop. The nose as well as the ears has a color always in harmony with the fur. The ears have a high implantation, they are a little bent and fall next to the cheeks. The fur is short, fine and copious, with mixes and spots that, at first sight, seem to form a solid color similar to wine or purple pink.

CARÁCTER Y ADAPTACIÓN
It has a splendid character, full of sweetness and docility, and an enthusiasm that make it, besides being a great pointer hunter, a charming company. Training them is a very simple task; it is enough to do it firm and affectionately. It adapts perfectly to the family life.

During a long time breeders wanted that the natural fur in this braco to be the original “faded purple” color and that the dogs had a short tail from birth.

CUIDADOS Y EJERCICIOS
Watching the diet and hygiene are simple tasks because they don’t require special attention. It must be provided with time and space to get plenty of exercise every day and enhance their muscles.
