BRAZILIAN MASTIFF

The Brazilian mastiff originates from the dogge and mastiff breeds sent to America by the conquerors. Due to its excellent sense of smell, in the past it was used in plantations to chase fugitive slaves. Currently, it is a work dog that performs its hunting and herding tasks perfectly. Little known outside of Brazil, except for the surrounding countries, especially in Argentina.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the BRAZILIAN MASTIFF
It is large, powerful looking, agile, strong, with a smooth line and a strong neck. It can weigh at least 50 kg and be 65 to 75 cm tall to the cross, a little shorter in the case of females. Its fur is short, dense and flat against the skin; every color, uniform or tawny with a solid base, is admitted. The head is well rounded and proportioned to the rest of the body. The muzzle is wide with a black nose; the ears are big, inverted V shaped, fleshy and droopy; the eyes adapt to the coat color, ranging from brown to yellow, and are medium sized and oval shaped.

TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the BRAZILIAN MASTIFF
Brave and determined, very affectionate toward the owners, it is especially tolerant with children. It takes its loyalty toward the family to the last consequences, able to show its apathy to those who threaten them due to its strong guardian instinct. It keeps a balanced and confident attitude.

It adapts well to new environments, although it doesn’t like urban nor closed places, and, despite it preferring mild climates, it can also adapt to other weathers. It should socialize with other dogs since the first stages.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a BRAZILIAN MASTIFF
A good brushing session every once in a while as well as long walks and outdoor exercise, along with a nutrient balanced diet, is all this dog needs to feel well.

The mastiff’s skin is loose all around the body, but mostly in the cervical area, where it forms deep wrinkles.
