BULLTERRIER
This English terrier breed was selected from bulldog and white English terrier, now extinct, crossings, and later with the pointer, which gave it a larger size, to achieve a good fighting dog, a very popular activity in the XIX century. When dog fighting was banned in 1850, the bullterrier was recovered for other activities such as guarding and defense. There are two other varieties, so similar they share the same standard, although they go into shows separately since 1936: the color bullterrier and the miniature bullterrier.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the BULLTERRIER
It is a well proportioned dog, with an evident musculature, robust appearance, vigorous and even fierce and an arched and powerful spine. The breed standard does not specify limits in measures nor weigh in the normal sized individual, but it does in the miniature variety, setting it in a maximum 35.5 cm height to the cross, all the other definition parameters being identical. Its head has a very distinct oval and long shape, with a practically inexistent stop, with almond shaped, very dark and small eyes. The fur is short, thick and shiny; always white, except for the color bullterrier that can be black, red, fawned or tabby over black or tricolor.
The bullterrier’s neck is long, and very muscular, moderately arched and decreasing width toward the body and without a double chin.
Behind its fierce fight dog appearance, hides a very loyal pet.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the BULLTERRIER
Even though it was originally a violent dog, it gained the necessary balance to turn into a moderate tempered and reliable dog through later crossings, friendly with people around it, active, decided and intelligent. However, it can present danger to other dogs due to its fighting instinct, along with the extraordinary strength it has. Training should be firm, this way it easily subjects to discipline tamely, despite it being stubborn sometimes, but usually its adaptation is good, preferably if its life goes by in a home with enough outdoor space. This is a brave and strong breed.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a BULLTERRIER
Its fur requires little care, aside from usual brushing. The exercise should be regular, for which if living in the city, it will have to go out a couple of times a day. Whenever possible, it is recommendable to take it somewhere it can run freely during a while.
