GREAT BASSET GRIFFON VENDEEN

The most famous breeder for this dog has been Le Coulteux.

This is a breed raised in France, descendent from the king’s White dog and some ancient griffon, probably with some blood contribution of a pointer. In 1946, this breed was practically extinct and reconstructed from the few specimens available, setting a new standard in 1962.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the GREAT BASSET GRIFFON VENDEEN
Sturdy, well proportionate dog with a stand between 34 and 42 cm and a weight of 18 to 20 kg, this dog has a well developed chest and a high neck. Its stop is well defined; the muzzle is long and square with a slightly bulgy nasal canal and a prominent, black nose. The eyes are large and dark, they have a loyal and intelligent gaze, and the ears are flexible, narrow and thin. Its fur is long, rough and tangles, tawny or bicolor tawny and gray. It is the fastest of bassets.

TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the GREAT BASSET GRIFFON VENDEEN
It is very active and passionate, decided and intelligent. It devotes all of its affection to the master, especially if it can tag along during hunting trips. It needs firm training, since it has a clear tendency to stubbornness. It has currently also become a good company dog, loyal and energic, however it doesn’t adapt well to living in a flat.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a GREAT BASSET GRIFFON VENDEEN
The great basset griffon vendeen has a great need for daily, running exercise. Its diet or cleaning does not need special care, brushing its tangled fur every day is enough.
