HOVAWART


This German breeds, little known outside of its country, it was originated from Swiss sheepdogs, Hungarian shepherds and Pyrenean mountain dogs. According to documents dated from 1230, the hover wart keeps its same physiognomy to our day, which determines the breed’s purity. It was believed disappeared for a long time until 1922, when a group of breeders boosted the breed, regenerating and selecting the breed from the scarce specimens found. At the beginning they were used in the rural environment to guard the farmyards, reason for their little, or even lack of, popularity.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the HOVAWART
It is a medium sized and strong dog, it is between 60 and 70 cm tall to the cross and weighs from 35 to 40 kg. It has long, dense and wavy hair, which can be black, black and reddish or tawny, the eyes are oval shaped and the nose’s color in harmony with the coat. The head is sturdy; the ears are high, triangle shaped, and the tail long with abundant fur. Its strong voice and acute hearing have made it an excellent rescue assistant.

The torso is longer than half of the cross’ height, a solid thorax, a deep chest and straight spine.

It is an appropriate dog for rescue labors due to its excellent auditory capacity.

EXERCISE AND ADAPTATION
The hovawart has a sweet and kind temperament; it never is aggressive and abides to its owner’s orders very obediently. It is excellent company, kind and affectionate with people around it and patient toward the children. It is happy, playful, brave and hard working. It is very easy to train due to its curious, docile and adaptable temperament, with a clear preference to life in the country or, at least, a house with a garden. It needs have a close coexistence with its masters.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a HOVAWART
It is not a dog that requires special cares, simply the normal care any breed with this type of fur needs. Daily exercise is essential to keep its muscle mass.
