KARST SHEEPDOG


This oriental dog lives and was bred in the mountain area of Kras, in former Yugoslavia, not being well known outside its natural environment. It is a tireless shepherd, whose breed was officially acknowledged in 1939, although there are documents dated back to 2689 that make reference to their work qualities and morphological traits.

The Karst sheepdog has rounded feet with hard pads, in order to walk through the rocky lands of Karst.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the KARST SHEEPDOG
This dog has no size variations, it is always medium, 57 to 63 cm and 32 to 42 kg. It has long, copious, light gray hair, which darkens towards the cross, where it is intense gray; the undercoat is woolly, long and dense. It has a wide head, with a wide muzzle, dark nose, oblique and dark brown eyes. The ears are long, inverted V shaped and falling on the head, according to the breed’s standard.

Although they are similar on the outside, its temperament is very different from the charplaninatz, which is a biter.

TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the KARST SHEEPDOG
It is a dog with a good character, noble and cheerful. It is very easy to educate due to its fast order understanding. It is very brave but not aggressive, although it doesn’t trust strangers. It is an effective and affectionate company dog. It adapts well to its family, but doesn’t feel comfortable locked in a flat.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a KARST SHEEPDOG
Caring for Karst sheepdogs are the regular for fur that length and abundance. We must pay special attention to possible otitis, which are very common in animals to droopy ears. On the other hand, it needs long and frequent exercise to keep in shape.
