KING CHARLES SPANIEL


It is a very ancient English breed, which reached great popularity since the XVII century, as recorded in several period paintings, in which this spaniel sits beside several monarchy personalities, as the portrait of Charles II of England painted by the Flemish Van Dyck, in which a breed’s specimen appeared, whereof its name. There was a period, in which its extinction was feared, in favor of the most recent Cavalier King Charles, another spaniel of similar characteristics, generated with the blood contribution of the King. An American breeder, who was very appreciative of the breed, devoted to traveling through England gathering all the specimens with the King Charles spaniel’s typical muzzle, and was able to recover and develop its linage renovating interest in it. Shortly after the end of World War II, the breed was officially acknowledged, which already had a club founded in 1929.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the KING CHARLES SPANIEL
It is a small dog that doesn’t stand over 29 cm nor weighs over 7 kg, it is elegant and solid looking, its head is large and vaulted, the muzzle is square with a black nose and its nasal orifices are very open. The eyes are very large, dark and with a sweet expression. The ears are droopy and furry. The fur is long and glossy, with a silky structure, slightly wavy but without ringlets, in four color varieties: The called King Charles, jet black with fire spots; the Prince Charles, tricolor with a pearl white background with black and fire spots; Blenheim, bicolor in a pearl white background with reddish spots; and the Ruby, intense red uniform color.

TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the KING CHARLES SPANIEL
We can say that this spaniel is a happy dog that, sometimes, may seem more a toy than a pet; it is docile, tender and very affectionate. Although occasionally it seems reserved, it loves the family life and enjoys playing with children, from who it tolerates any mischief. The education provided should be very simple, since it is mainly based in social behavior in terms of hygiene rules, social behavior and more, since its adaptation as well as its obedience are excellent. It is not a dog apt for living outdoors, on the contrary, it is perfectly indicated for life inside the home, be it in a house or a small flat.

Currently, the breed is widely spread outside of Great Britain, being very popular in several countries, such as France and the United States.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a KING CHARLES SPANIEL
The fur in this breed requires daily brushing, only that way it can achieve a healthy and pretty dog. It is very important that it is sheltered from humidity and cold, conditions it is very sensitive to. Its eyes and ears should have constant care and hygiene, to prevent any possible infection. Although it doesn’t require much exercise, it is convenient to take advantage of its daily walks to allow it to run around.
