Koolie

This dog originated from the Australia. It is known to be a working dog, especially a category of herding dogs. The Koolie have known to exist in Australia since as early as the 18th century. These dogs also go by the name German Koolie or Australian Koolie.

These dogs may commonly have either one or both eyes blue in color. They are known for their color, that is, merle coloring, both blue as well as red and sometimes even a tricolor. Some of these dogs may have collars, white bibs and even face markings. They have short, smooth and medium coats. Their coat might grow long, but it is not common. They are medium sized dogs. The length of their body is slightly larger when compared to their height. They are more popular for their working skills rather than their confrontation skills. They are very agile and can adapt to any situation. They grow up to be approximately, 16 inches to 24 inches in height. Black colored coolies will normally have a black nose accompanied with black eyes which may have tones of black, sometimes including blue.

These dogs are very energetic, adaptable and loyal. They are also very dedicated and like to please the owners. They are also very dedicated to their job and tend to keep working till they are so exhausted that they drop. This can be seen when the dog starts to chase a hare with its great speed, until it just can’t run anymore. They can herd anything that moves. They also have the ability to jump on the backs of sheep and sometimes even cattle. Due to their willingness to please the owner, they tend to do very well when it comes to obedience, tracking and agility trails. As they are not aggressive by nature, they are very good with other smaller or bigger pets. They are good with children, but they children should be 6yeras and above as they need to know how to be the leader of the pack. They are not suitable for a small backyard where they have nothing at all to do. They had the ability to remain gentle and calm around lambs and ewes, but were not afraid to use their bite when it came to mongrel bulls and steers. They are quick in nature. The pups however are not working dogs and thus they make good companions. Their brains need stimulation and their working frames require regular exercise and work. These dogs require owner who has the ability to be firm yet calm, they need to know how to be a consistent leader of the pack. Good human to canine communication is very essential.

As they are very energetic dogs, they require a lot of vigorous exercise or lots of real work to do to stay in shape. They require their daily long walks or a jog. While on a walk, the one leading the dog should make sure that the dog heels beside or behind them because, in the dog’s eyes, the leader is the one leads the way. These dogs are not the type who will lay around the house all day having nothing to do.
