Lakeland Terrier
This breed of dog dates back to as early as the eighteen hundreds. These dogs are considered as one of the oldest breeds of terriers that still exist today. The original name for this breed was known to be the Patterdale Terrier, but this is not to be confused with the breed of dame name that exists today. The Lakeland was a result of a crossing between the Bedlington Terrier and the Old English Wirehaired Terrier. The crossing took place in the district called Lake in England and hence the dog gets its name.
The main purpose of these dogs was to protect the crops and the heard from animals such as the fox and other vermin. They were also used to hunt animals such as badgers, foxes, otters and other den animal. The one special quality of these dogs was the fact that they could hunt on any grounds, be it an uneven terrain, the woods, the fields and even on water. These dogs are still used for the purpose of hunting and sometimes even as a companion dog. These dogs have a number of talents, some of them include, hunting, watchdog and tracking.
These are a bunch of small yet sturdy dogs. They are not totally square shaped but proportionally square in shape, a lot like the Welsh terrier, but these dogs are a little smaller in size. They have a deep and a narrow body. They have a well balanced head. Their head is quite rectangular in shape. They have a very strong muzzle. Their noses are black in color. Liver dogs have a nose that is liver in color. They have a very small pair or ears. Their ears fold over to form a v shape. Their eye color may range from a wide collection of lack, brown or even dark hazel colors. They have moderately small eyes with an oval shaped outline. Their barks are so soft that they can be barely noticed. When viewed from the front, it can be noticed that they have a strong and straight pair of front legs. They have quite large sized teeth.
These dogs are double coated dogs. The outer coat is very hard and quite wiry in their texture. Their under coat on the other hand is closer to their skin and is very soft. Their hair is usually trimmed in such a way that their muzzle and their legs have a little longer hair when compared to the rest of their body. They usually have solid coat colors. The colors may range from blue, silver, black, liver, red or wheaten. They may also have a few saddle markings. These saddles may be black, liver, blue or different shades of grizzle in color. When born as puppies, they are usually black in color but they change their color as they grow. They have a high set tail. These dogs are very alert, cheerful, loving, lively and affectionate dogs. These dogs generally love kids. These dogs enjoy digging around.
