Lapponian Herder
For almost centuries now, the people inhibiting the areas f Finland, Norway and Sweden as well have found interest in reindeer hunting and reindeer herding. This is one of the most important Sami culture. Sami was the name of the tribe of people inhibiting the countries. Over the times, the reindeer hunting went out of the fashion and reindeer herding came more in to fashion. There was the requirement of breed of dog that would help in herding these reindeers. For this purpose, the Finnish Lapphund and the German shepherd was crossed. The result of this crossing was the development of a new breed of dog that had in it the Lapphund’s hardiness and the German shepherd’s maneuvering skills. This new breed of dog was perfect for herding the reindeers and these dogs came to be known as the Lapponian Herder. The main country of origination of these dogs is considered to be Finland. These dogs also go by the name, Lapland reindeer dog and also by the name the reindeer dog.
Some dogs in general, may it be a part of any breed, are noticed for their outstandingly marvelous working ability and some others are valued for their remarkable appearance. The Lapponian dog is such a kind that it lucky enough of have both of the above desirable qualities. These dogs are one of a kind. These are medium sized dogs that have a muscular body. They are well boned. They also have a very dense as well as an impressive coat. This coat is designed in such a way that it protects the dig from the frigid and the extreme arctic climate.
These dogs have an elongated head. Their skull is slightly convex in nature. Their muzzle is a slightly tapering one; it tapers in to a pitch black nose. It s not quite that compulsory that all dogs need to have a black nose, the nose harmonizes its color with the color of the coat. They have a pair of very tight lips and a pair of string jaws. These jaws are accompanied by a complete set of dentition and a scissor bite. They have darkly colored eyes that harmonized themselves perfectly with the color of their respective coats. Their eyes are oval in shape. And carry in them a very lively, devoted and a keen expression.
They have ears of medium length. They are usually pricked. The ears are broad at the base and are profusely covered with hair. Their ears are set well apart. These dogs are very strong. They have a muscular back. They have a deep and spacious chest. Their belly is slightly tucked up. They have a low set tail which is also profusely covered with hair. When at rest, their tail hangs down. They are double coated and have a weather proof coat. Their outer coat may e of long or medium length. It is rather harsh to touch and is straight and erect. Their undercoat is thick and fine and is black or brownish gray in color.
