LEONBERGER
As in many other cases, there are several theories about the origins of this breed, although it is probably from Leonberg, the German area of Württemberg - , whence the name. These same differences extend to their age, for there are reference since 1770, despite that they are only acknowledged in 1949. The Leonberger comes from Saint Bernard, Terranova and the Pyrenean Mountain dog crossings. Amongst the several famous characters that prefer this breed for company we can mention Marie Antoinette, Richard Wagner, Empress Sissi and Bismarck.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the LEONBERGER
It is a large, strong and muscular dog. It has a beautiful, narrow and elegantly proportioned head, black nose, dark eyes and rounded and drooping ears. The males are between 76 and 80 cm tall, females are moderately shorter and the maximum weight for both is 80 kg. The fur has a medium texture, not soft nor rough, long, straight or slightly wavy, with a mane at the neck and upper portion of the torso. The colors can be yellow, more or less light, golden, reddish, silver gray or chestnut.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the LEONBERGER
The Leonberger is a protective, affectionate and loyal animal. It can be defined as an excellent companion, who loves to go on walks with its owner and play with the children, with who it’s very patient. It is brave, obedient and has a very good memory, qualities that make its training and adaptation capacity easier. Because of its size, it needs open spaces to move around and not apt for a city life in an apartment.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a LEONBERGER
It is best to brush it soft and frequently. It needs to do a lot of exercise to avoid bone problems.
The Leonberger is considered a working dog and it is very appreciated for water rescue.
