Lithuanian Hound
As the name suggests, the Lithuanian Hound originated from the Lithuanian republic. These dogs are very rare in number and are not found outside their native, that is, the Lithuanian republic. These dogs are the result of an attempt made by the Lithuanian hunters to re create the original Curlandish hounds. These dogs were originally used for the purpose of hunting animals like hare, boar and fox. These dogs were once very popular but after the break out of the World War 2, their numbers decreased and only a bunch of 78 dogs are said to survive this war. However their numbers increased again. But after the fall of the Soviet Union, their popularity decreased. This decrease is also because of the change in hunting habits. These dogs were used to hunt larger animals in a large space, but as the hunting plots have decreased in size, these dogs became less desirable.
These dogs are sturdy and heavily boned dogs. They are very muscular and sleek. Their coat is short in length. It is has a glossy shine over its black color. They also have a limited number of tan markings. They have a long tail which is usually held down low. They do have heavy bones, but compared to other hounds they are lighter and smaller in size as well. They are robust dogs, with very sleek yet muscular proportions. They have a moderately larger head. Their eyes are set wide apart. They have medium sized eyes that are normally black in color. Their ears are of moderate length as well. They have rounded tips and also are said to hand close to their cheeks. They have a medium sized muzzle which is in perfect proportion with their head and the rest of their body. They have a black nose and are usually self colored so as to harmonize the nose with the color of their coat.
They usually have a level or scissor bite. Their necks are moderately long. Their necks have the absence of dewlaps and is also very string. They have a leveled top lone. Their chests are broad, long and deep. They have a medium sized body. They have perpendicular legs as well as forelegs. They have round and strong feet which are accompanied by compact toes. They have a long and a gradually tapering tail. These dogs have very well balanced movement and thus have an excellent reach. As they are medium sized dogs, they grow up to a moderate height and weight. Their height may range from about 21 inches to 24 inches on an average and they weigh around approximately 60 pounds to 75 pounds.
The Lithuanian Hound dogs have a very impressive sense of sight making them an excellent sight hound. They are very determined and thus they make very good hunters, not resting unless they have caught the animal. These dogs are very persistent and have great speed and vigor; these are the qualities that make them great hunter dogs. These dogs have a marvelously splendid voice. When it comes to their families these dogs are very pleasant as well as very agreeable. These dogs are very energetic and free spirited. They have excellent movement. The owners of these dogs need to have the ability to be firm yet calm, consistent as well and confident.
