Longhaired Whippet
The history of this dog is not very clear. In one side, there is this man Walter Wheeler, who claims that he is the one who developed these dogs by bringing about the recessive long coat gene from his smooth coated whippets but on the other hand are the people who do not believe that Walter had anything to do with it, but these dogs were developed as a cross between a long coated breed and a Whippet. Paintings and other art works form evidences for the fact that these long coated dogs were used mainly for the purpose of hunting. This also says that these dogs existed once up on a time but later due to some reason or the other their numbers decreased and they all went extinct. These dogs are often confused to be the Silken Wind hound; this is because of their similar appearances. These dogs are related but they have successfully developed in themselves a lot of differences and thus are now knows as two separate breed of dogs.
They have a protective and a decorative coat. They have a very keen sense of sight and thus make great sight hounds. They are small, athletic yet graceful dogs. They express their competitive spirit in their very alert demeanor. These dogs have the ability to run and hunt in a very large range of terrain and even in kind of weather. This is mainly due to their size and coat. They are almost never aggressive, especially when it comes to other dogs of their same kind. They also tend to display love and affection towards their human associates. It is also seen that in most cases, these dogs do not have an aloof and an undemonstrative temperaments.
Their coat is very silky and has a soft texture. Their long is equipped with only a sufficient amount of under coat, mainly for their warmth and protection and does not make their coats bulky. The length of the hair on their muzzles, front of forelegs, and on their feet is short. The trimming of their coat is usually not done. They have a very elegant head. Their heads are moderately long when it comes to their length. When viewed form above, their skull looks slightly tapering in nature and ends in their noses. This tapering is very gradual. They have a very wide back skull. They have a flat skull, and lower and parallel to this skull is their muzzle. They have black pigmented nose.
They have a very strong muzzle. This muzzle is such a way that it is in perfect balance with their skull. When compared to their overall body size, they have quite large teeth. Their teeth should compulsorily meet to have a scissor bite; any other bite is not permutable. They have very large and bright eyes. These eyes carry a questioning expression in them. Their eyes have a color that is as close to black as can be. Diluted Longhaired Whippets may have blue colored eyes as well. They have very soft ears which are folded. They have a very stiff base. When these dogs are in attention, their ears tend to fold backwards.
