LOWCHEN
This breed’s origin, known in France since the XIV century, it is barely known that it seems to have emerged from the bichon fries or the Maltese and that it was a pet in castles and palaces. It had very popular moments followed by a long period of indifference until, almost disappeared, the breed was reconstructed again.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the LOWCHEN
It is, precisely, the lowchen’s short and wide head what it more similar to the frise, with its large, round and dark, intelligent looking eyes, the droopy and bristled ears and the dark nose. The body is short and proportionate and stands between 25 and 32 cm and weighs from 4 to 8 kg. The fur is long and wavy but without curls, every color is admitted, except for brown, spotted or uniform, the most common being white, black and light yellow, lemon tone.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the LOWCHEN
It has the particularity that it likes to learn, which aside from showing its intelligence, offers the guarantee that its adaptation to any environment and to the family will be perfect. The small lowchen is instinctively reserved before strangers, but never aggressive, and affectionate to the masters who it keeps unconditional loyalty. It responds with affection and joy to any caress it receives from them.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a LOWCHEN
It is a healthy dog, which doesn’t need special care except for regular hygiene. Aside from regular brushings, there are those who wish to cut its fur in a typical lion mane, which some federations demand if it is presented in a pageant. It gets used to reduced spaces as long as it is taken for walks frequently.
It was a model for sculptors, as proven in Saint Fermin’s grave in the Amiens Cathedral.
