MANCHESTER TERRIER
As its name indicates, it was originated in Manchester, North west England, during the XVIII century, selected as a mice hunting dog. This activity gave it well deserved fame, as proven in the contests in which, almost with no exception, it achieved every first place for the amount of rodents it hunted in a minimal time. It seems a fact that its ancestors were a small Italian greyhound and a black and tan terrier.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the MANCHESTER TERRIER
It is compact and sturdy, but with an elegant appearance. Its ideal height is between 40 and 41 cm. The females are, as in most cases, slightly shorter and lighter. The head is long and narrow, with a flat skull and sharp muzzle, and the small, shiny and dark eyes portray a lively and intelligent gaze. The hard hair is short, shiny and tight, intense black in color with well defined spots, mostly in the belly and legs, in the characteristic fire color of canine coats.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the MANCHESTER TERRIER
The Manchester terrier is an astute and intelligent dog and, despite its timely stubborn moments, receives training easily. It is loyal and affectionate towards the people it lives with, especially children, for which it is considered a good pet and an appropriate company dog, without adaptation problems and very keen to the home.
This is a very domestic dog, perhaps because in the farms it used to live in kennels were never used: at night they dogs were given shelter inside the homes.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a MANCHESTER TERRIER
It is a very naturally clean dog, so it doesn’t need special care for its short straight fur, unlike most terriers. It is best that it sleeps inside the house since the cold and the wind affects it. It doesn’t need much exercise either, but, during short periods, it likes to run around outdoors.
