Manchester terrier


Developed in the country in England and originating from the tan and black terrier, the Manchester terrier were bred mainly for the purpose of hunting rats and other small vermin and even today have retain the ability. It is a cuddly house pet but turns into a very efficient worker wherever it is, when it feels there is a rodent nearby.

The Manchester terrier is mainly of 2 types, standard and toy. These dogs have a smooth, muscular and a compact body. They have tight skinned, long, compact and a narrow head. Other than the slight indention that it has up the forehead, its head is almost flat. This indention has a light stop which is visible only when the dog is viewed from the side. They have a long and a tapering head. If the ears are kept naturally, they are usually v-shaped and semi-erect and its front flap folds over. However, the toy Manchester variety has naturally erect ears. When cropped up, they become long and pointed. They have small, almond shaped, dark, nearly black eyes. They have a black nose as well. Their teeth either form a level or a scissor bite. They have a tail that tapers in the end to a point and is thick at the base with an upward curve. They have a very smooth, dense and a short coat. Their neck is slightly arched, slim, graceful and of average length. They have a narrow chest between their legs and in the brisket it is deep. Their forechest is not well-defined and have well sprung ribs. Their coat colour is usually jet black and a rich mahogany tan, but these colours do not run into or blend into each other. They form well defined and clear lines of colour. They may or may not have a tan spot over each of their eye. Their muzzle is tanned up till their nose and this yan extends till under their neck and ends in a v-shape. They are small yet sturdy animals. They have an alert and an intelligent expression. They females weigh up to approximately, 12 to 16 pounds and the males to approximately, 16 to 22 pounds. In height, they grow up to about 15 to 17 inches.

These dogs are high-spirited, agile, powerful, and highly intelligent and a cunning dog that is quite eager to learn. They are faithful and independent, displaying their true terrier nature. They are extremely sporty, lively, keen, vigilant and keen animals. It makes a very good companion, as it is devoted and discerning. As they like to please their handlers, they learn very quickly. They require leadership qualities from their owners and they thrive for attention. They have a tendency to get bored, very destructive and bark when left alone or is ignored.

These dogs need a lot of exercise, that is, along with their daily walks; they should be allowed to run. These dogs have the ability to run fast and also keep up the speed for a long time. These dogs should not be allowed off the leash as they enjoy chasing. When taken care of properly, they have a life expectancy of about 15 years.
