The Miniature Australian Shepherd

The miniature Australian shepherd is quite identical to the normal everyday Australian shepherd except in size. It is also called as the mini aussie. They are popular when it comes to dog games like herding, dog disc and so on. A full grown dog of this breed may grow upto 18 inches in height and may weigh around 40 pounds. The mini aussie is well balanced when it comes to its appearance. Its coat is of moderate length and enough coarseness which may have a very slight wave but never curl. The coat usually has two layers, the outer thick and coarse one that covers and protects the inner soft and downy coat. It is quite smooth to touch. The length of their body is quite larger compared to their height. The ribcage, chest and their shoulders is only moderately developed.

The dogs have a ready to jump into action appearance due to their straight legs and feet that are a little arched with their back legs. Their feet are compact, oval shaped with close knit toes. They have well defines feminity or masculinity. They have a strong, clean cut head that is in proportion with their body. Their muzzle has a slightly rounded tip. They do not have lips that hang over their lower jaw. They have clear almond shaped eyes. Their ears are high set, triangular with a slightly rounded tip. Their neck that naturally flows into their powerful and flat shoulder blades is in perfect proportion with the rest of their body. The slightly longer hair that covers their legs and their lower body is known as furnishings. They have a very short and stubby tail.

They are working dogs. They love to be around people and all other kinds of animals. They are very easy going and not at all aggressive and will gladly stay at home and socialize with cats or other smaller animals. They make good watch dogs as they tend to bark when someone unknown is around. They are wonderful with kids of all ages as they are loyal, affectionate and loyal. As they love to please, they will listen to commands from anyone in the family. They require a lot of exercise so that they do not get bored. If their energy is not channelized in the right direction then they will resolve to destructive ways such as chewing and so on. They also enjoy being the centre of attention. They are perpetual puppies that enjoy playing. As they are highly intelligent and have a sixth sense about what the owner wants, they are very easy to train.

These dogs are not prone to many genetic mutations. The merle/merle crosses usually carry a blind or deaf factor. Hip problems may also occur. They are very easy to groom unlike other double coated animals. They need to be regularly brushed and bathed only when required. They do not shed a lot. They do well in cold conditions and as long as they are taken care of, they can survive in a normal apartment. Their litter size is about 2-6 puppies and they grow up to the age of 12-14 years.
