Montenegrin Mountain Hound


The Montenegrin Mountain hound is a rather rare breed of dog. This dog was used for its advanced hunting skills. They originate from the mountains that are spread out in the Balkan region. These dogs were bred for hunting the abundant game present in these mountains. This breed was once known as the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound. The other Balkan hounds share the same origin as the Montenegrin Mountain Hound. This breed of dog is used for hunting hare, fox and other small game. They are known for their speed and advanced tracking abilities.

The Montenegrin Mountain hound has a compact, solid body of a medium size. Their bodies are well muscled with a good bone structure. This breed of dog is covered with a smooth and glistening black coat that is primarily made up of short hair. The coat is rather rough and is not very smooth to touch. This kind of dog has a very muscular back that is perfect for hunting. This dog has a deep and string chest with a slightly tucked up belly. The Montenegrin mountain hound is usually seen in a basic black colour. The coat can have some tan markings with a white spot sometimes present.

This breed like other hounds has a very well developed nose and is always seen in the basic black. These dogs have string jaws and oval eyes that are rimmed with black. This dog has a very calm and well balanced personality. They are very loyal and become very easily and deeply attached to their owners or masters. These dogs make excellent house pets. They very lovable and do not trust strangers. They can be aggressive at times to unknown people. This breed is very affectionate towards children and can be around other pets, provided they were raised together. This dog will require a firm trainer with patience. These dogs will require early obedience training and socialization.

These dogs require lots of love and affection. They do not respond well to harsh treatment and require constant physical and mental stimulation. These dogs can live indoors but prefers having a large backyard to run around and play in. They will require lots of exercise and play time. They make good hiking partners and love the outdoors. This breed will appreciate being in an active family. They are very energetic and should not be left home all alone for long hours. Pent up energy can lead to aggression. These dogs are quite easy to look after. They do not require too much grooming. This dog should be brushed once a week to remove dead skin and keep the coat looking health and shiny. They are hunting dogs first and should be groomed after every hunting expedition. Special attention must be paid to the ears. If left unattended they can develop an infection. Their paws should also be thoroughly inspected so that infection can be kept at bay. This breed has a life expectancy of around 12 years.
