Mudhol Hound


The Mudhol hound is a type of sight hound. These dogs are and Indian breed that are seen in Northern parts of Karnataka. This type of hound is specifically a sight hound. These dogs are mainly used as hunting animals or guard dogs. These dogs are sometimes also known as the Caravan Hound. This breed of hound has a very short haired coat giving the dog an almost bald appearance. These dogs have characteristics that are very well developed. They look a lot like the typical hound with long muscular features. These dogs have been known to reach great speeds while in a chase and are very good tracking dogs.

The Mudhol hound has a narrow and long head with a pointed muzzle. Their ears are triangular and medium sized. They have very powerful and long jaws, although they appear to be rather weak. They have a large nose that is either liver or black in color. They have large, dark oval eyes that are usually in either an amber or hazel color. These hounds have a gaze that is very piercing with an intelligent expression. This breed has a muscular, long and clean neck which fit perfectly into laid back and well developed shoulders. Their legs are strong and muscular with a well developed bone structure. The body of these hounds forms a natural curve with a tucked in belly. Although short, their coats still have a silky texture. Their coats are seen in many solid or combination colors.

The Mudhol hound is a very independent dog. They are somewhat aloof at times but still very intelligent animals. They are very elegant in their movements and are primarily a working breed of dog. They make exceptional hunters and are not particularly friendly around strangers. They can be very temperamental animals. They prefer being handled only by their masters. They even reject being pet by other people. These dogs are very courageous and have a great stamina. These abilities allow them to hunt almost any kind of animal. These dogs will not do well being coupled up in an apartment and much prefer the great outdoors. This dog needs lots of open space and nature to run around and be happy.

These dogs require an immense amount of exercise and can be left to run around in the open. They are ca[able of taking care of themselves and do not require much care or grooming. They are not dogs that will do well with harsh owners. Their owners need to maintain a calm disposition and should be patient. Their trainers should be firm but still gentle when training the dog. The Mudhol hound stands at 55-74 cms tall with the males being taller than the females.

These dogs are very healthy and do not have any genetic ailments. These dogs do not like cold climates. They are not fond of the water either. These dogs have a life expectancy of about 12-15 years. These dogs are average shedders.
