NAPOLITAN MASTIFF

This breed could have originated in the Naples towards the I century of our age, from the molossers bred by the Romans. Alternating periods in which it was almost extinct with others in which it was attempted to regenerate, it reached our times due to the great labor of the dog expert and writer Piero Scanziani, who was successful in selecting specimens that, in turn, originated the beautiful Neapolitan mastiff that currently enjoys a well deserved popularity and appreciation amongst those who know it. From its creation to the present day, this beautiful animal has been a fighting dog, a war dog, police and guardian. This dog has earned an increasing place as a company dog.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the NAPOLITAN MASTIFF
It has an impressive posture, very proportioned, muscular and strong, with a brawny appearance and at the same time, seigniorial. It has a magnificent head and robust bone structure. Sometimes, the ears are completely amputated. The eyes are oval shaped, surrounded by deep wrinkles. The male’s height is 70 to 75 cm, while females are not over 68 cm. The fur, 1.5 cm long, is longer, in gray and Brown tones. It has a peculiar trot and some movements that, sometimes, remind those of a feline. The skin is abundant although it is not very attached and forms deep creases on the head and a large double chin in the neck.

TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the NAPOLITAN MASTIFF
It is loyal, determined, balanced and intelligent. It needs good training, firm but affectionate, since, although its nature is tranquil, can be aggressive. When another dog insists in bothering it looking for a fight, the Neapolitan mastiff fights to the last consequences. However, it is noble to the people in the family, docile and kind, particularly children, towards who it dedicates its enormous tenderness and patience when playing.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a NAPOLITAN MASTIFF
We cannot deny that the Neapolitan mastiff requires expensive and difficult care, since it eats a lot every day and, due to its size, it needs a lot of space to be able to move without problems. It is important to watch the diet closely, balancing it, and providing it with that vital space for its good development, although it’s not a dog that exercises much. Hygiene care is little, only occasional brushing is necessary to keep the fur clean.
