The Newfoundland dog is a breed that originated in Canada and England. This is a rather large dog that is almost always seen in a deep black color. A full grown Newfoundland is said to be the strongest dog there is. The Newfoundland dog has a nice water resistant coat. They weigh anywhere between 45-70 kgs. They are rightly called “giant” dogs. They stand at about 63-74 cms tall. The standard colors for a Newfoundland dog are ladseer, brown, grey and black. The Newfoundland dog has a large bone structure. This gives them mass and power. This feature allows them to swim even the roughest ocean against the crashing waves. The Newfoundland has a brilliant lung capacity that makes them unbeatable swimmers. Their double layered coat protects them against the extreme temperatures in the ocean.

The Newfoundland dog is a very heavy drooler. But this characteristic is helpful when on the job. Their droopy lips give passageways that enable the dogs to breathe easily even when their mouth is full of water. The Newfoundland dog has an advanced swimming technique as well that can be seen as a somewhat modified version of the breaststroke. The Newfoundland dog is very intelligent and is known for their sweet disposition. These dogs love anyone they meet and are very patient and affectionate even with strangers. They will however attack if the sense a threat. Most people get scared by the dog’s sheer size. These dogs will no tolerate anyone harming their family. The Newfoundland Dog is very caring and trustworthy. They are very affectionate towards children and are surprisingly gentle with them. These dogs are however very messy eaters. Even while drinking water they tend to spill a lot.

The Newfoundland dog is very sensitive to voice. While training their masters need to be firm yet calm. A raised voice will upset these dogs. These dogs will require a lot of exercise. They can adapt to an apartment but will be happier with a large yard to play in. These dogs shed their under coats twice a year. These dogs have a life span of 9-15 years.
