Norwegian Buhund


These dogs originate from Norway, and thus they derive their name from their native country. It is said that, during the ancient Gokstad excavation a Viking grave was found. This grave was said to date back to about 900 years old. When this grave was opened, 6 skeletons of different dogs were found. When properly examined, it was found that all these dogs were of different sizes. These dogs would soon be the representatives for the present day Buhunds. It was said that when the Vikings died, their most necessary and cherished possessions were buried along with them, beside them. This was done, mainly to take care of the Vikings even in their afterlife.

These dogs were to perform their daily duties even after their death that is in their afterlife. Their daily duties included protecting the farms and herding the sheep and the cattle. They still retain this duty of theirs today as well. These dogs are used for many purposes. They are mainly popular for their working abilities. However, other than this, these dogs are very well trained and have the ability to aid to the hearing handicapped. These dogs are also said to perform a few kinds of police work. The score very well and quite high in their agility and obedience trails. In the olden days, it is said that these digs were used for the purpose of hunting animals like wolf and bear.

Today however their purpose has shifted to working with livestock and also to guarding their homes and their families. These dogs as considered by many breeders, as probably the easiest to train as their obedience level are very high. They also have a very innate to desire their owners and they also come with a very quick aptitude for learning new things. These dogs are very independent thus they have no problems in being left alone for a long time. They do not have the tendency to start feeling lonely without any company.

These dogs are a spitz type of dogs. They are quite medium in size. They have a muzzle that is quite similar in size to their skull. Their muzzle comes to an abrupt but yet a well defined stop. They have a black colored nose. They have a pair of oval shaped eyes. Their eyes are dark in color. Their eyes are also very heavily rimmed. They have a pair of medium sized ears. Their ears are generally very prick. They are usually held erect. Their ears are very mobile in nature. Their tails are usually very tightly curled over their backs. Their coat comes in quite a lot of color ranges. Their coat color may range from being wheaten or biscuit. They may either be light red or yellowish red or somewhere in between. They may be wolf sable or black in color. These dogs are double coated dogs with an outer coat and an inner coat. Their outer coat is generally smooth as well as harsh. Their under coat on the other hand is very soft and woolly in nature.
