NORWEGIAN HOUND
One could say that it is the Norwegian corresponding of the Finnish dog, with which it shares its origins and is also not known outside its native land. They are two similar dogs in several aspects. The Norwegian hound is a robust and strong dog, able to adapt to every kind of weather and terrain. It is an exceptional hunter with the ability to run after a prey for an entire day without wearing out. It can be said that it is more a marathon runner than a sprinter.
It is much appreciated as a hunting dog because it is a hard worker. It is an excellent assistant in chasing the prey in any type of terrain, be it in the forest, mountain or plains.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the NORWEGIAN HOUND
The male in this breed has an ideal stand considered between 53 and 50 cm. The female is accepted in a lower or higher variation of 3 cm, for which it is included amongst the middle sized dog. With a good bone structure as well as muscle structure and brawny, but elegant appearance, this dog is proportioned and does not give the impression of being heavy. The skull is bulky, with a well defined but not sunken stop, the muzzle is square, the nasal canal is wide and the nose is black. Its eyes are large and round, dark and with a very expressive gaze; the ears are wide, narrowing toward the tip, they droop, and are moderately long. The fur is not too short, but rigid, dense and shiny, firm black or blue in several shades with tawny or white spots. The spots in the fur can be large, but are never over half the body, which would represent a serious fault in breed purity, according to official federation criteria.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the NORWEGIAN HOUND
The Norwegian hound is a good company dog, affectionate to the people around it and very tolerant to children, once it knows and has gotten used to them. It socializes well with other dogs and is, in general, a peaceful animal, which rarely gets mad, and which is easily educated, as long as we are firm with it.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a NORWEGIAN HOUND
The same advise as when caring for the Finnish hound can be applied to this breed, adding that they need to have good ear hygiene to avoid possible infections.
