Old Danish Pointer

These dogs, as the name suggests originate from the country of Denmark. These dogs are one of the two breeds of hunting dogs that originate from the country of Denmark. These dogs were developed by a man named Mortem Bak, who was from a place Glenstrup, which belonged to the country of Denmark. In his honour, these dogs are also known as the Bakhund in their native country, that is, Denmark. This man had tirelessly worked for endless hours and contributed his efforts in developing this excellent hunter dog. These pointer dogs were developed by crossing a regular bloodhound with these dogs that the gypsies brought from Spain. It took eight generations of extremely careful and also very extensive breeding to create a pure breed of this pointer dog, which had a piebald coat.anf thus, this is how the old Danish pointer breed of dogs were born!

However, it is said that as time passed on, the popularity of these dogs went down and thus their numbers started to decrease. It was almost extinct. However, after the war, these dogs slowly were successful in gaining back their once lost popularity. These dogs are today extremely popular in Denmark and outside Denmark for their excellent hunting abilities accompanied by their very gentle and affectionate character.

These dogs are medium sized dogs. They have a predominant white coat which may have the presence of a few brown markings here and there on their bodies. These dogs are highly suited for hunting. In its native country, Denmark these dogs also go by the name Gammel Dansk Honsehound. The dogs of this breed are said to have a very impressive stature. They also have a very muscular yet a very compact body. The most significant feature or the characteristics of this breed of dogs would have to be the clear distinction between the male and the female dogs. The males are clearly much more powerful when compared to the females. The males are also larger in size. The females on the other hand, are lighter in weight and are also much more spirited when compared to that of a male dog. The female dogs if this breed are said to have more of a capricious and as impulsive attitude to them.

However, both the males and the females are equal when it comes to their courage and determination when they are hunting. These dogs are more on the quieter side and are known to have a very stable nature. However, this is only when they are free. When they are doing their job of hunting, the fiery personality of the female dogs and the bold and the gutsy personality of the male dogs will come out in front. These dogs are very versatile when it comes to hunting. These dogs are very adaptable and can adapt to hunting on any terrain provided to them. These dogs follow the technique of moving very slowly and very cautiously, never even for a second loosing contact with the human hunter. They have very keen sense of smell and thus can small their prey from a distance.
