OTTERHOUND
Since the Middle Ages, otter hunting was already popular in England. It was in that country, during the XIX century, where breeding and selection of a dog breed dedicated to that type of hunting and, through successive water bloodhound crossing, the otter dog was conceived, as popular as it is in its country.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the OTTERHOUND
It is strong, resistant, agile and flexible movements. Males are 60 to 68 cm high and the females are 58 to 66 cm, both weigh between 30 and 42 kg. The skull is slightly vaulted and the muzzle is long, square and a large and dark nose. The eyes, with a lively and affectionate expression, have a color that varies according to the fur tone, and the ears are long and droopy, with a crease characteristic of the breed and fringed at the tips. The fur, around 5 cm long, is dense, rigid and can be in any color.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the OTTERHOUND
It is not aggressive; on the contrary, it is a serene and friendly dog. Loyal to its master, friendly to the people it knows and indifferent with strangers. It is somewhat stubborn, for which it needs good education, firm and affectionate at the same time. If it is not trained it can become a destroyer, but when trained it abides well to orders and can be charming. It doesn’t like to be locked up at home. It is cheerful and playful.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a OTTERHOUND
It requires regular exercise time, if it is possible for it to splash around it will be happy. Besides hair brushing, it is not necessary to provide it with any special care.
The otter dog is an excellent, for which water doesn’t intimidate it if it separates it from the otter’s burrow.
