The ancestry of these dogs are said to include a breed of dogs that was a result of a crossing between the now extinct, a naive and an indigenous breed, Bardino Majero and an imported English Mastiff. These dogs are said to have been developed in the Canary Islands, around the 1800s. Thus they also get their other name, the canary it is said that these dogs were developed and bred mainly for only 1 purpose, and that was for the purpose of dog fighting. There was a time that dog fighting became very common and gained a lot of popularity in the various countries on Europe, these dogs became famous along with the art of dog fighting for their endurance and tenacity.
In countries like Ireland, these dog fights took place in open fields, but in the native of these dogs, the Canary Islands, these dog fights took place in pits or rings. Along with the outlawing of dog fighting and also the introduction of other foreign dogs like the German shepherd, these dogs started to lose their popularity and were almost extinct. However, their numbers were brought back up due to the hard efforts of the American veterinarian Dr. Carl Semencic. These dogs are extremely powerful dogs. They have a very strong and an equally powerful head. This strong and powerful head of theirs is quite square in shape and is as long as it is wide.
These dogs also have the presence of a very broad muzzle. This broad muzzle is in perfect proportion with their head. Along with all this, in perfect proportion with their head as well as the rest of their body, they have the presence of a broad and an equally deep chest. The rump of these dogs, however, is a slightly raised one. These dogs are also known to have a very thick skin covering them. These dogs also have very dense bones. Along with the presence of dense bones, these dogs are very muscular as well. As mentioned earlier, they have a very powerful and a wide head. Their head is also equally massive. This massive head of theirs is accompanied by a large set of jaws.
They have the presence of a pair of ears that is in perfect proportion when compared to their head as well as the rest of their body. These proportional pair of ears of theirs is usually kept cropped up. Their coat colors may include various brindles and fawn. Quite a few white markings can sometimes be seen here and there on their body. These dogs when allowed to fully grow in to healthy adults and are taken care of properly and given the required amount of their daily exercise, can grow up to be quite big dogs. They can grow up to be a minimum of 21 inches and to a maximum of 25 inches in height. When these dogs are proper and healthy food, they can weigh up to a minimum of 80 pounds and a maximum of about 130 pounds.
