PERUVIAN HAIRLESS DOG
This breed’s origin is still a mystery that on one hand places it in a distant Pre Inca period, which seems to be demonstrated by some ceramic pieces found, and on the other, it is said it arrived in Peru by the hand of the Chinese that emigrated after the slavery abolition. Those who defend the first hypothesis assure that it had the same magical symbolic importance than the hawk, the mountain lion or the snake. Nowadays there is great concern about the survival of this breed.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the PERUVIAN HAIRLESS DOG
There are three varieties, told apart only for its size; the small is 25 to 40 cm, the medium is 40 to 50 cm, and the large is 50 to 65 cm. As the hairless Mexican, its main trait is the alopecia, which allows seeing its smooth and flexible skin, although dark strands of hair are admitted in areas such as the back, the head and legs. The body is elongated, long necked, slightly arched and without a double chin; the chest is deep but not wide and the back is straight.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the PERUVIAN HAIRLESS DOG
It is a very noble animal, very affectionate with the family and untrusting with strangers. It is, almost permanently, in a state of alert, for which it is a magnificent guard dog. It adapts well to a domestic life which, depending on each variety’s size, is more or less recommended in an apartment.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a PERUVIAN HAIRLESS DOG
Hairless dogs are very easy to care for, their alopecia is enough to keep them flea and tick free, which overrides the allergies that bother other breeds. The exercise indicated depends on the variety, while the larger needs more mobility; a couple of daily walks are enough for the smaller.
The ears are close to 10 cm long, thin and the dog keeps them erect. The eyes are slightly almond shaped; their color varies in harmony to the skins tone.
