POINTER

Unlike many other hunting breeds, the pointer dog is trained to indicate the exact location of the prey. This task is performed with the aid of its exceptional sense of smell and its voice tone. During hunting, the dog needs to remain close to its master, until he orders it do advance, which it does tracking in only a certain area. In this group, all breeds are after the same objective, which is not to catch the prey until the hunter has it in view, but differ in their way of performing. For example, the pointer stops when facing the prey, keeping its characteristic rigid position, with the muzzle pointed in the animal’s direction. The spaniel behaves differently, it raises the resting bird with its bark and makes it fly, announcing the hunter the exact location to which the shot should be directed. They are, definitively, dogs used in bird hunting and its main quality is its specialty to show the prey. Amongst the pointer dogs are two well defined groups: continental and British. The individuals in both groups are intelligent, fast and hard working. Pointer dogs are in charge of showing the hunter the prey’s location.
