Pointer
The pointer breed of dogs was first mentioned in a record in England and this was around the year of 1650. It is said that these dogs were the result of a crossing between the Italian Pointer, the Fox Hound, the Blood Hound, they Grey Hound, Newfoundland, Setter and the bull dog. They get their names form the way these dogs stand, completely motionless, when they spot their game. These dogs were extremely popular for hunting that is before hunting with the use of guns became popular. These dogs were used for the purpose of finding animals like hare and the animals that these dogs found were left to the grey hound to hunt.
These dogs became highly popular among the hunters mainly because of their excellent sense of small and the way in which they can catch s scent of animal miles far and also because these dogs would point the hunters at the exact direction the prey was in. These dogs are also known to be very quick in nature. They have the ability to cover a lot of land in the shortest amount of time given. It is due to this that they were used for the purpose of flushing out birds. These dogs did not do well in water. These dogs were also never used for the purpose of retrieving a kill. These dogs are best suited for the war weathered environment and do not work good in cold weathers.
These dogs are also often known as the English pointers. These dogs are very powerful in nature. The width of their heads is quite equal when compared to the length of their muzzles. They have quite a long neck. Their muzzle is quite deep as well. This deep muzzle of theirs comes to a sudden, well defined and a clear stop. They have a nose that is either black or brown when it comes to their color, this is in the darker coated dogs. In the lighter colored dogs however, their noses are either lighter or flesh in color. Their teeth usually tend to meet to form a very powerful and a very strong either a level or a scissor bite. They have a pair of round shaped eyes. These round shaped eyes are quite dark when it comes to their color. They may have a few markings here and there on their body. Their darkly colored eyes are colored in such a way that they are in contrast with these markings.
They have a pair of hanging ears. Their ears are generally kept erect. They have a pair of straight front legs. They have quite a long tail. Their long tail is, large and broad at their root but tapers to a point to their end. Their coat, when it comes to their length, is short. Their short coat is also quite smooth to touch and dense in nature. Their coat color varies from dog to dog. Their coat color ranges from being primarily white in color with a lot of patches to being tri colored. The patches may be spread here and there all over their body. These patches may be lemon, black or orange in color.
