Pomeranian


These dogs get their names from their place of origin, Pomerania. This now forms the part of Germany and Poland. It was in this place, Pomerania, that these dogs were developed from the ancient spitz breed of dogs. The original bred of these Pomeranian breed of dogs however, were much larger in size than these present ones. The original Pomeranian breed of dogs weighed in at about approximately 30 pounds. These dogs were most commonly known to be used for the purpose of herding.

A few of the owners of these breed of dogs were Marie Antoinette, Mozart and Queen Victoria as well. It was in 1870 that these dogs were officially recognized by the kennel club in England. Queen Victoria was the one who started breeding these dogs and showing then to the public. It was also she who stared breeding these dogs down in their size. Thus this breed of dogs became highly popular in England. These dogs are known to have a lot of talents in them. Some of these are watch dog, agility and also performing tricks. As these dogs are very fast in their learning they usually make very superior performers of the circus.

These dogs are very small in their size. They are more like a toy to look at. When it comes to the shape of their heads, they are wedge shaped in nature. This wedge shaped head of theirs is such that it is perfectly in proportion when compared to the rest of their body. They have a very short muzzle. This short muzzle is usually straight and fine in nature. This straight muzzle of theirs comes to a very well defined, pronounced, and clear and quite an abrupt stop. Their noses do not have any specific color as such. It is usually colored such that the color of their nose matches with the color of their coat. Their teeth generally meet to form a scissor bite.

They have a pair of medium sized eyes. This medium sized eye of theirs is usually dark in color. When it comes to the shape of these medium sized dogs, they are almond shaped in nature. They have a pair of small sized ears as well. These small sized ears are set quite high on their heads. They are also usually kept erect. They have a small sized tail which is feathered heavily. This feathered tail is straight and lies flat over the dog’s back. The declaws are sometimes removed and sometimes not removed. These dogs are sometimes known as pom. These dogs are double coated animals. That is, they have the presence of two layers of coats.

They are the outer coat and the inner coat. These dogs have the presence of a very thick double coat. They have a very long and an equally straight outer coat. Their outer coat is also very harsh in nature to touch. Their under coat pr the inner coat on the other hand is very soft to touch. The inner coat is also very thick as well as very short. Their coat is slightly longer in a few areas of the body like their neck and their chest area.
