PORTUGUESE PONTER
It is a Portuguese breed, whose origin is not exactly known although, within the most logical assumptions, we find that it could be a descendant of an extinct Spanish braco. Despite it being known since the XIV century, its first standard was set in the 1930s. It is not known outside of Portugal.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the PORTUGUESE PONTER
It has a strong structure and good muscles distributed in its 58 to 60 cm height in males and 48 to 50 in females, and a weight of 20 to 27 kg and 16 to 22 kg respectively. It has square lines, a wide neck with a slight double chin, deep chest and a wide and straight back. The stop is pronounced, the eyes are large, oval shaped and chestnut colored. And the droopy ears are medium sized, wide, fine, flat and flexible. The fur is short, tight and somewhat rigid or chestnut in firm colors as well as spotted.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the PORTUGUESE PONTER
It is a balanced animal, with a sociable temperament and a little condescension towards other dogs, which indicates its great self confidence. It is very active and agile. It feels special affection toward its most direct owner, although it is affectionate to every person that shares its environment. It is a dog with an explorer soul that tracks a discovered track tirelessly due to its fine sense of smell. It allows education obediently and its adaptation offers no difficulty, although it prefers to live in a place where it enjoys outdoor space.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a PORTUGUESE PONTER
Since this is a resistant and healthy animal, normal hygiene care is enough; but it should receive plenty of exercise.
Through the most abrupt terrains and the most adverse weather conditions, it will follow the preys shoeing its master the exact location.
