Portuguese water dog
These dogs, as their name suggests, are native to the country of Portugal. In its native country however, they go by a different name, that is, Cao de Agua. This in the language of Portuguese means the dog of the water. These dogs are said to have been developed from a bunch of working dogs from the Iberian Peninsula. These dogs make excellent swimmers, thus their name, water dogs. It is said that these dogs worked next to the fishermen doing all kinds of works, and this has been going on for a long period of time. These dogs are so good at their job that they were considered as the part of the fishing crew and were considered to be very valuable. These dogs have a lion trim and this is done for a very specific reason.
The fishermen would generally shave off their muzzle and their rare to facilitate easy swimming. However, long hair was left unshaved because they were requited for the purpose of keeping the dog’s vital organs warm and also to protect the dog’s main body and its neck of any injury of any kind. These dogs were also used for the purpose of catching as well as herding fish. They were used for the purposes like retrieving broken nets or anything that else that would fall in to the water. They were also once used as messengers, carrying messages from one ship to the other or from the ships to the shore and back. These dogs were also used as guard dogs, as they were used or the purpose of guarding their ship when kept if a foreign port.
These dogs were so famous for all these talents and abilities of theirs that even the non commercial fishermen would rent these dogs for their occasional fishing trips. These dogs are not very large, not very small; they are just perfect and medium sized dogs. They are also very muscular dogs. They have a very straight and a level top line. They have a very broad head that is slightly domed as well. The length of the head is a little longer when compared to the length of their muzzle. Their muzzle generally comes to a well defined, well pronounced, clear yet an abrupt stop. They have a very broad nose that is generally black in color. Their teeth usually meet to form a strong and a powerful level or a scissor bite.
They have a pair of medium sized eyes. These medium sized eyes of theirs are round in shape and also when it comes to their color is black. They also have the presence of a pair of medium sized ears. These medium sized ears are set quite high up on their heads. They are generally shaped somewhat like a heart. These ears of theirs are also generally left hanging down. Their tails are not docked. This is done so as to help them in their swimming. Their tail is quite broad at the base and then tapers towards the end.
