Pyrenean Shepherd


The Pyrenean Shepherd is a breed of dog that is seen in parts of southern France. This dog is originally a sheepdog. This dog is infact the smallest sheepdog there is. These dogs are originally working dogs; they do well on a farm. These dogs love running around and have as, much energy as any other dog. This dog maybe small but can rival any other sheepdog that is twice its size. These dogs have very fine medium length hair that is seen throughout their body. These dogs have a shaggy look and are easy to maintain. They have been bred in the medieval times as farm dogs. They make very good herding dogs. These dogs have a lot of energy and stamina.

The Pyrenean Shepherd is seen in two varieties. These dogs have either a rough or a smooth face. These dogs are the smallest breed of French Sheepdogs. This dog has relatively long legs for its size. The rough faced dog stands at 38-46 cms tall and the smooth faced dog’s stands at 39-52 cms tall. Both varieties weigh in at about 7-15 kgs. These dogs are never seen as fat. They are always muscular, thin and lithe. These dogs are built for speed and agility. The dog has a rather small head. Their heads have a noticeably flat skull and triangular yet short muzzle. The muzzle has a no well defined stop. These dogs have Semi prick or rose ears. The ears are however more often than not cropped by the owners. The Pyrenean Shepherd has small dark eyes that can be light depending on the color of the coat.

The Pyrenean Shepherd has a nice coat with fine hair. There is a considerable amount of feathering noticed on the tail of the dogs. There is some feathering around the head as well. The coat is usually seen fawn which is the most common. They either have or don’t have a black mask. The other colors are bridle and shades of merle. These colors are not very common. The difference between the two varieties is that the rough faced dogs have longer hair than the smooth faced dogs. This dog has a very lean and muscular body. These dogs are natural athletes. They have angular legs that can move very fast and with grace. These dogs carry their tails below the top line of their body. There is a slight curve upwards noticed in the tail of this breed.

The Pyrenean shepherd is a natural work dog. These dogs have full of energy and are able to do any work on the field. They are eager to please their masters. These dogs are very intelligent and can be trained easily. They are obedient dogs. These dogs are very dedicated and loyal dogs. They are very alert and can make good watch dogs. They will bark anytime stranger approaches. These dogs make great family pets. They are very affectionate and can adapt easily to their surroundings.
