The Rat Terrier
The rat terrier is a dog of an American heritage and is often perceived as a farm dog. They were believed to be a type rather than a breed and have much in common with a mixed breed, the “Fiests”. They have a broad built chest, with muscled limbs, a strong neck and brawny shoulders. They are small dogs, but are weighty. When the dog is alert, the ears are straight and erect, and otherwise vertical and upright. These dogs are born with tails of half or complete length. The dog’s coats are various in color- sable, creamy-white, red and white spots, black and brown, merle and gray. The coats also come in a combination of colors, in spots. Spots usually appear in the white part of the skin or fur.
The dog is said to have an intelligent expression owing to the erectness of the ears and the tail usually ends in a bob. These dogs are not identified as dogs that shed a lot of hair; their shedding is restricted to the winter. They are suitable for people with allergies. The Rat Terrier weighs from 10 to 25 pounds and is 14 to 19 inches tall, to the shoulder. The animal is gaining popularity as a house pet.
The Rat terrier is a lovable, smart, caring and inquisitive dog. They are lively and energetic. Their affection is immense and they make excellent pets for those who love the idea of an active dog. They are excellent companions for children, especially so, if they are raised with the same people from the time of their puppyhood. They are usually good with strangers but will make formidable watchdogs. They are playful and friendly and do not make too much noise. They are brave, aggressive, spirited, lively dogs, their behavior, typical of all terrier breeds.
They are easy to train as they are keen to learn and please their master. These dogs are a very intelligent breed. They are obedient once trained but will require constant rules to follow. They require a method of firm but patient training, and this is what they will respond to the best. These dogs are very good swimmers and love the feel of the water. These dogs are work dogs, although sometimes used as hunting companions. They thrive on attention and love and companionship and they love the human touch.
This breed works well in a domestic or farm environment and can be put to work. They can be kept in good shape through constant physical and mental activity and training. The dog will adapt easily to the compact space of an apartment, but prefer an open field as all dogs do. They will require a lot of exercise as they are very hyper and need to get rid of excess energy. They love to play with toys. They are easy to groom but quick to get dirty. They require a good brushing to maintain their coat and get rid of dead skin.
