These dogs are also known as the “butcher’s dog”. These dogs are quite medium sized dogs. These dogs are said to have originated from the country of Germany. These dogs were developed and bred mainly as herding dogs. These dogs have a very high intelligence level and are also said to be very hardy in nature. It is said that these dogs were also used as draught dogs, used for the purpose of pulling carts that would carry meat and other different products as well. Along with this, these dogs were also used for the purpose of hunting as well. These dogs have an abundant amount of strength in them. During the first and the second World Wars however, these dogs were used for many other purposes as well. They were used as messenger for carrying messages. They were used as draught as well as guard dogs.

However, nowadays, these dogs are used for the purpose or rescue in many rescue missions. They are also many a times used to assist as well as guide the blind. These dogs are also seen playing roles of guard dogs and police dogs. These dogs have a medium sized skull. Their skull is usually quite broad in between their ears. When these dogs are viewed at from their side, it can be seen that their forehead line is slightly arched in nature. These dogs have a very well developed nose. Their nose is broader than they are round in shape. Their noses are generally black in color. They also have a pair of quite wide nostrils. Their muzzle is in such a way that it neither looks elongated not does it look shortened when compared to the dogs’ cranial region. The dog’s nasal bridge is quite broad at their bases and also moderately tapering in nature.

They have a pair of close fitted lips that are generally black in color. The darker the colors of their gums the more desirable are the dogs. They have a pair of very strong and powerful jaw bones. Their teeth meet to form a scissor bite. They have a pair of medium sized eyes. These medium sized eyes are almond shaped in nature. Their eyes are generally dark brown in color. Their eye lid, just like their lips are very close fitting. They have a pair of medium sized ears that are in perfect proportion with the rest of their head and their body. They are set quite wide apart from each other. They are triangular in shape and are quite pendant like to look at.

These ears are also set quit high up on their medium sized heads. As the ears are laid forward and quite close to their head, their skull looks a little broader. They have a very strong neck that is quite medium in length. Their necks are slightly arched in nature. They have a very straight back which is quite firm and equally strong. They have a very roomy chest that is broad and deep in nature. When the tail is left undocked, they are in level with the upper line of the body f the dog and also when these dogs are at ease; their tail is left hanging down.
