SIBERIAN HUSKY
This is a pure breed dog, bred many centuries ago as a sled animal by the chickchi, a town in the North East of Asia. From the late XIX century, it was spread to other countries of the world, especially in North America, when it was introduced to long distance races celebrated in Alaska. Since then it has become one of the main competitors in sled pulling.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the SIBERIAN HUSKY
The husky is a medium sized dog, balanced body, deep chest, straight back and inclined hindquarters, but never deep set. Its height is between 53.5 and 60 cm, in the case of males, and between 50.5 and 56 cm in females, weighing 20.5 to 28 kg and 15.5 to 23 kg respectively. The head is proportioned, with high set and triangular ears, the nose is according to the coat, the eyes are almond shaped and oblique, it has a friendly expression and it is dark colored or blue, although the husky often has an eye in each color. It has thick, long and abundant fur, with a woolly structured undercoat that protects it from the cold, allowing it to tolerate minus 50° C. Every color is admitted, the most common are amongst several gray shades, but they can also be black or red, with a large and white mask; the variety is wide.
However, the Siberian husky is much more than a pretty dog. It belongs to a specialist breed in the difficult job of pulling sleds. It can live in temperatures that no human being could endure without protection and it is genetically prepared for a task that, as soon as the harness is played for the first time, it begins pulling the sled.
In 1925, during a serious diphtheria epidemic in Nome, Alaska, the Siberian husky had a predominant role in saving many lives by performing relay races to take the essential serum through great distances.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the SIBERIAN HUSKY
It is loyal, intelligent, affectionate and obedient dog. It is very sociable, it rarely comes across as mistrusting towards strangers, for which it doesn’t have the slightest guardian instinct. Although it is never aggressive, they don’t like strangers no have patience with children. It is not a dog that should live in a flat, because the short city walks are not enough, despite it accepts training very well which includes, naturally, the adaptation to the environment and, very especially, in the sense of responding the master’s call, because it tends to be a restless “escapist”.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a SIBERIAN HUSKY
The Siberian husky fur requires frequent brushings, daily in the shedding season, and a trimming of the hair that grows in between the fingers. The diet needs to be watched since it has a clear tendency to gain weight, for which the daily exercise should be energetic in order to unload its vitality.
