SKY TERRIER
It has existed in the Skye Island, at the North of Scotland, for centuries and it was developed for vermin hunting, through the crossings of the Maltese and other terrier varieties. During some time it became the favorite pet of the British nobility, because of the sympathy it aroused in Queen Victoria. Then its popularity decreased a lot, but currently it is gaining it back, since families have proven that it is an excellent company dog.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the SKY TERRIER
It has a short, elongated body, robust and solid structure, the Skye, which also has a decided and elegant appearance; it stands around 25 cm and weighs about 11 kg. Its head is long; the ears are black and covered in fringe, as well as the eyes and forehead as they are also covered by a thick fringe. The tail is not cut, contrary to many other terriers; it has equally long copious fringes. The whole fur is smooth and hard, with a soft movement, can be black, gray in several shades or cream; in any case the limbs are black. Its fur takes several years to get its definitive traits.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the SKY TERRIER
It is bold, brave and somewhat fussy. It is convenient to get used to living with people, if not; it can be shy, even if it’s well trained. It doesn’t like strangers to touch it, to the point to biting them if they pester it excessively. It should also be watched when it’s near a smaller animal, since they tend to chase them. Despite this behavior, it is sensitive, loyal, loving, playful and fun with the family that adopts it. Its adaptation, once used to people, offers no difficulty and can feel happy in an apartment.
It should be trained to tame its stubbornness and to make it an excellent pet.
This breed’s limbs are short but muscular. The front feet are larger than the hind feet.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a SKY TERRIER
The fur needs the breed’s typical professional haircut every six months; at home, it is convenient to brush the fur frequently to prevent it from tangling. It is a very healthy dog, since it requires no special health and doesn’t need much exercise either, being daily hygiene walks enough.
